ERIE, Pa. – Senior
Christie Cicero scored two goals to propel the Mercyhurst University women's hockey team over St. Lawrence University on Tuesday evening. The Lakers improved to 9-5-2 in the season with the out of conference win. St Lawrence fell to 6-8-1 overall this year.
Both teams skated through a scoreless first period with the Lakers taking control. Mercyhurst outshot St. Lawrence 13 to three in the opening period with five different players taking two shots on net.
At the start of the second, St. Lawrence took advantage of two power-play goals. At the 2:10 mark, Mel Desrochers tallied her sixth goal of the season after shooting the puck just under Makela shoulder from an odd angle. The Saints' Kristen Padalis scored four minutes later to stretch the score 2-0 on a back to back power-play goal.
Mercyhurst then scored three unanswered goals starting with Cicero. She scored her first goal of the game on a Lakers power-play opportunity at the 15:55 mark. The Lakers kept the puck moving with sophomore Emily Jangia starting the momentum. Janiga then passed it to senior
Christine Bestland to the right side of the Saints' net. Bestland then tossed the puck to Cicero who blasted the puck past goaltender Carmen MacDonald.
Sophomore
Kathy Donohue tied the contest at two on another power-play goal in the final period. Junior
Shelby Bram passed the puck to sophomore
Jenna Dingeldein at the hash marks for a shot on net. The shot went through the crease where Donohue was waiting back door and slide the puck as MacDonald.
For another nine minutes, both teams skated through the 2-2 tie. With 1:13 left on the clock, Cicero crashed the net and forced the puck through the legs of MacDonald to give her team the goal advantage. Bram and senior
Kaleigh Chippy added the assists. The goal marked Cicero's first game-winning goal of the season.
All told, the Lakers outshot the Saints' 40 to 24 throughout the entire contest. The Lakers were successful two times out of their seven chances on the power-play. The penalty killed allowed two goals on five Saint opportunities.
Junior goaltender
Amanda Makela took the win and improved to 8-5-2 in the season. Makela stopped 22 of the 24 shots faced. MacDonald fell to 6-3-1 after making 37 saves.
Both teams are back in action at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Wednesday, November 27 at 3:00 p.m.
