#13 Men's Soccer Edges Gannon 2-1; Wins PSAC Regular Season Title

ERIE, Pa. – For the second straight season, the No. 13 Mercyhurst University men's soccer team captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Regular Season Title after the 2-1 win over Gannon University on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 14-4-0 in the season and 10-1-0 in the PSAC. With the win, the Lakers received the first round bye and are also the hosts of the PSAC Championships on November 8-9, 2013. Gannon ended their season with a 7-11 overall record and 5-6 in the PSAC.

Both teams went scoreless after the first 45:00 minutes of play. Mercyhurst was the first to score as freshman Danny Deakin tallied his 12th goal of the season at the 60th minute of the contest. Junior Eyale Dagne passed the ball to Deakin at the 19 yard line. Deakin carried the ball before taking a left footed kick to the top left corner of the net.

Red-shirt Freshman Jack Watson extended the score 2-0 after a one on one battle with Gannon's goaltender Jason Barbarino. Junior Fernando Martinez marked the assist after giving the go ahead pass to Watson.

Gannon took over the momentum after the Lakers second goal and scored at the 80th minute to cut the lead in half. Ose Alli tallied his first goal of the season from a header. Gavin Linsell set up the pass after Gannon received a free kick on the offensive side of the pitch.

Freshman Nicholas Smith made three saves on four shots to improve to 7-1-0 in net for Mercyhurst. Barbarino took the loss for Gannon after making seven saves on nine shots on goal.

All told, the Lakers attempted 16 shots to the Golden Knights eight. Mercyhurst had six attempted corner kicks to Gannon's one.

The Lakers host the PSAC Championship at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field on Friday, November 8 with the championship on Saturday, November 9. Semifinals are set for noon and 3:00 p.m. with the championship taking place on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Opponent will be determined after the Tuesday, November 12th quarterfinals.
