MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team earned its second consecutive shutout victory on Saturday morning, defeating the Marauders of Millersville University by a 9-0 final. The Lakers improved to 3-0 on the season while Millersville dropped to 1-3.
Mercyhurst started strong in doubles, sweeping the Marauders and only allowing two points combined in the three matches. Senior
Caroline Bristol and junior
Sarah Baich started with an 8-1 victory over Millersville's duo of Elizabeth Wagner and Tori Davis. Senior
Courtney Thompson and freshman
Annie Baich followed suit with an identical 8-1 win over Alexandra Heller and Stefanie Fisher. Junior
Katelyn Caniford and sophomore
Devon Hubbard teamed up for an 8-0 blanking of Heather Grove and Maggie Carr.
For the second straight day, the Lakers swept singles play as well, with all six victories occurring in straight sets. Three individuals - Thompson and the Baich sisters - earned 6-0, 6-0 victories over their counterparts from Millersville. Two others, Caniford and junior
Taylor Wedlake, gave up just one point each during their matches. Bristol, again, had to work the hardest, but was not tested by Millersville's #1 Elizabeth Wagner, as Bristol earned the 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Mercyhurst will travel to Niagara University next weekend to compete in the Niagara Duals. The Lakers will battle the Purple Eagles on Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m. Mercyhurst will then play Robert Morris on Saturday and Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday to conclude its fall schedule.
