CALIFORNIA, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team team dropped a five-game match at California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon. The Lakers lost by scores of 25-21, 28-30, 20-25, 25-22, and 15-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest.

After dropping the first set, Mercyhurst rallied with victories in each of the next two frames. In the second game, the teams traded points for much of the action. The Vulcans eventually gained a 22-18 advantage before the Lakers made their move. A pair of kills by Sarah Vick, a Sarah Wegrzyn point and an ace by Nicole Texido allowed Mercyhurst to go up, 24-23. Cal answered with two straight scores, but Kelly Vitt found Vick for a tying kill.

After a Vulcan point, Wegrzyn scored to even the game at 26. Cal responded with another point, but Tai Lattimore assisted on a Rachel Crittle kill. The Vulcans made an attack error, but followed with a kill to make it 28-all. A pair of Cal errors made Mercyhurst winners, 30-28.

In the third game, it was close again until the Lakers took control later in the set. After being tied at 13, Kelsi Romatowski and Nicole Texido each had a kill. Wegrzyn posted two points, while Lexi Stefanov had a kill and Texido recorded another ace. Another Wegrzyn kill made it 22-16 Mercyhurst. Points by Veronica Crosby and Sarah Puckett inched the Lakers closer, and Crittle had an ace to put Mercyhurst ahead, 2-1, in the match. Cal answered with wins in the last two frames.

Wegrzyn led with 19 kills and 16 digs. Stefanov added 13 kills, while Kelly Vitt compiled 33 assists. Texido tallied 26 digs and Lattimore had 21 digs with 16 assists.

The Lakers fell to 14-11 overall and 8-7 in the PSAC. The Vulcans moved to 22-4 overall and 15-0 in the league. Mercyhurst returns home next week, hosting Edinboro on Friday, November 1, at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
