Field Hockey Defeats Slippery Rock, 4-1, Friday Afternoon

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team won, 4-1, over Slippery Rock Friday afternoon. Four different Lakers scored in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory at Tullio Field.
 
Meghan Smith put Mercyhurst on the board with a hard shot from the top of the circle, making it 1-0 at the 10:43 mark. The Rock answered with a tying goal a few minutes later, but the Lakers quickly responded to gain control of the contest.
 
From outside the offensive zone, Kelsey Violanti fired a ball into The Rock defense. The ball deflected off the goalkeeper and into the cage, giving Violanti her first goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Marissa Faso cashed in a penalty stroke opportunity for a 3-1 advantage at the 21:30 mark.
 
In the second half, Violanti passed along the end line into the circle, where Kelsey Lovelace redirected the ball into the net for a 4-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining.
 
The Lakers outshot The Rock, 9-1, and earned nine penalty corners to three for the visitors.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC. Slippery Rock dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the conference. The Lakers host Bellarmine in a non-league match Saturday, October 26, at 5 p.m.
