Pembleton's Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey Past Mansfield

ERIE, Pa.- Blair Pembleton scored three goals as the Mercyhurst field hockey team beat Mansfield, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers improved to 7-7 overall with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory at Tullio Field.
 
Pembleton scored twice in the first half and then added a third goal midway through the second period. It marked the junior's second career hat trick. She was also the last Laker to score three times in one game, accomplishing the feat on September 13, 2011, at Seton Hill.
 
On Wednesday, Mercyhurst controlled the action early before cashing in twice late in the first frame. Meghan Smith found Pembleton on a crossing pass, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 30:39 mark. Marissa Faso hit a ball through the lower half of the offensive zone, where Pembleton knocked it in, making it 2-0 at the 32:02 mark.
 
In the second half, Mercyhurst sealed the contest with a pair of goals in 15 seconds. Emily Burns made a pass to Smith, who finished inside for a 3-0 lead. After a steal, Pembleton dribbled through the Mountaineer defense and scored at the 46:48 mark, picking up the hat trick.
 
The Lakers outshot Mansfield, 22-7, and earned 16 penalty corners to three for the visitors.
 
Coach Stacey Gaudette's squad is now 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Mansfield dropped to 4-10 overall and 1-7 in league action. Mercyhurst hosts Slippery Rock in another PSAC game on Friday, October 25, at Tullio Field.
