POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior Kaleigh Chippy of the ninth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team, notched the eventual game-winning goal in 2-0 upset over third-ranked Clarkson University on Friday afternoon.

After picking up the Lakers second shutout of the season, Mercyhurst is now 3-3-0 in the season. Clarkson suffers their first loss, falling to 5-1-0.

Mercyhurst dominated the opening period by outshooting Clarkson by a margin of 16 to four and captured a 1-0 lead by the efforts of the Lakers special teams.

During the third power-play opportunity of the period for Mercyhurst, the Lakers put the pressure on early and often. Halfway through the power-play sophomore Emily Janiga picked up the puck behind Clarkson's net from senior Kaleigh Chippy attempted shot that went just wide.

Janiga patiently waited before passing it to the open Chippy on the right side of the goal. Chippy gave a look to Bram who was even with the net and moved into the crease for Bram to pass pack to Chippy. She then redirected the puck into the left side of the net at the 16:06 mark to give her Lakers the 1-0 lead heading into the second. Mercyhurst is now 3-1-0 when leading after the first period of play.

After a penalty filled final two periods, the Lakers had to kill off all six of Clarkson's one man advantage opportunities. Through the diving efforts of the Lakers defense, Clarkson only had five shots on net the entire second period to the Lakers' nine and a game total of 29 to 19.

Clarkson was given a five-on-three opportunity at the 6:39 mark of the third period. Mercyhurst again played hard defense with the help of junior netminder Amanda Makela saving three shots on net. Makela also had help from her posts as Clarkson had two consecutive shots hit pipe during the power-play. The Lakers killed the Knights two man with a little less than ten minutes to spare in regulation.

Looking for a last minute goal, Clarkson pulled their goaltender to bring on an extra attacker at the 18:09 mark. The Lakers held off the offensive rush for 43 seconds before Christie Cicero blocked a shot by Clarkson's leading goal scorer Erin Ambrose. Ambrose made a diving poke attempt but Cicero's speed was not a match as she propelled herself down the ice and scored the empty net goal after just crossing the blue line.

Bram's assist in the first period marked her sixth straight game notching at least one point for the Lakers. Bram is second on the team with seven points on two goals and five assists.

Makela saved 19 shots to mark her second shutout in her last three games. Makela improved to 3-3-0 in the season. Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe suffered her first loss in net after making 27 saves.

Mercyhurst is back in action against the third-ranked Clarkson on Saturday, October 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
