ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University men's hockey team will jump right back into action on Tuesday night when it hosts perennial power Ferris State University at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Mercyhurst is 0-5-1 lifetime against Ferris State, recording the only non-loss in the all-time series in the last meeting between the two schools. Nearly one year ago, on October 20, 2012, Mercyhurst and Ferris State played to a 3-3 overtime tie, thanks to 39 saves from goaltender
Jimmy Sarjeant, and a goal and an assist each from
Ryan Misiak,
Paul Chiasson, and
Grant Blakey. Mercyhurst actually won the game in a shootout, but the game goes down in the record books as a tie.
The teams have played two games at the Mercyhurst Ice Center, but none since November 25 and 26, 2005. In those contests, the Bulldogs earned a sweep of the Lakers, defeating Mercyhurst 6-3 and 5-4. The teams were tied after two periods in both games, and Mercyhurst actually led 4-3 early in the third during the 5-4 loss.
The Lakers (0-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA) are coming off of a pair of losses at the prestigious Ice Breaker Tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this past Friday and Saturday. Mercyhurst dropped a 6-0 decision against #5 Minnesota on Friday night and then suffered a 5-2 setback at the hands of Clarkson on Saturday.
Sophomore defenseman
Anthony Mastrodicasa scored the only two Mercyhurst goals of the weekend - his first collegiate goals - in Saturday's loss. Juniors
Matthew Zay and
Kyle Just were the only other Lakers to register points, each recording an assist on Mastrodicasa's first goal. Junior
Jordan Tibbett started both games and allowed ten goals on 68 shots in five periods of action. Sarjeant played the final period of Saturday's loss to Clarkson and did not allow a goal in eight shots.
The second period during both contests proved to be nightmares for the Lakers. In the two games, Mercyhurst was outscored 6-1 in the middle period, 3-0 by Minnesota and 3-1 by Clarkson.
The Bulldogs (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) are coming off of an opening weekend split at Colgate on October 5 and 6 in Hamilton, New York. The Bulldogs won the first game by a 7-4 final before the Raiders returned the favor with a 1-0 shutout win the following night.
Ferris State, playing in its first season in the WCHA after playing in the now-defunct CCHA, got three points apiece from Justin Buzzeo and Garrett Thompson in the split with Colgate. Jason Binkley, Scott Czarnowczan, and Justin DeMartino each had two points in the two games. Charles Williams and CJ Motte each started one game in the series between the pipes. Motte got the win, despite allowing four goals on 32 shots. Williams suffered the hard luck loss on October 6, allowing only one goal on 31 shots.
The Bulldogs were the national runners-up in 2012.
Following Tuesday night's contest, the Lakers will go back on the road to take on Merrimack this Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19. Faceoffs from North Andover, Massachusetts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. both nights. It will mark the first meetings between the two schools.
