Men's Hoops Comes Up Just Short at #9 IUP Saturday Night

INDIANA, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team lost, 57-54, at #9 Indiana (Pa.) Saturday night. Callon Dailey's three-pointer in the final seconds came up short, as the Crimson Hawks escaped with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division victory.
 
After going down 47-30 with under 11 minutes left, the Lakers rallied to make IUP sweat down the stretch. Luis Leao hit a jumper and then Terrence Ingram caught fire. The sophomore drained a three-pointer with 9:29 remaining to make it 47-35. He followed with a rebound and two made free throws. Jonathan Ouegnin made a steal and a layup on the next trip down.
 
After an Indiana free throw, Ingram scored inside with 8:15 to go. The San Diego, California, native sank a jump shot to get his team within 48-43. Callon Dailey converted two foul shots at the 6:34 mark to inch the visitors closer. Scooter Renkin answered with a hoop on the other end, but Leao split a pair of free throws with 4:41 showing on the clock.
 
Paul Bilbo grabbed his own rebound and scored inside to put the Lakers down, 50-48, at the 2:55 mark. Marcel Souberbielle made two free throws for IUP. Ouegnin responded with a pair of made foul shots for Mercyhurst. Anthony Wells hit a free throw and then Leao found Bilbo for a layup and a foul with 1:43 left. Bilbo missed the free throw, and eventually, Renkin made a tough lay-in with 41 seconds to play for a 55-52 edge.
 
Ouegnin inbounded to Leao, who twirled underneath the hoop for a bucket with 33 seconds to play. Renkin connected on two foul shots and Mercyhurst ended up calling a timeout with three seconds left. Ouegnin inbounded to Dailey in the opposite corner. Dailey faked himself open and had a look to tie the contest, but came up short.
 
The Lakers started slow, but came on later in the first half. Two straight Renkin treys made it 10-5 IUP early. Free throws by Leao and Ingram got Mercyhurst close. After two Indiana baskets, Beau Samuelson hit a triple with 11:30 left. Leao followed with a jumper and then two foul shots, evening the score at 16. A Ouegnin layup put the Lakers ahead with 7:50 showing on the clock.
 
The Hawks bounced back after that, as Devonte Chance hit a jumper and a layup. Mathis Keita scored and Chance followed with a three-pointer, making it 30-21 going into the locker room.
 
Five consecutive IUP free throws opened the second-half scoring before Bilbo made a jump shot. The hosts scored twice inside and then Anthony Wells hit a three with 11:59 left, giving his team a 43-27 advantage. An Ingram trey was answered by a Devon Cottrell jumper, setting up the 24-10 Laker run to end the night.
 
Leao posted 19 points, including 8-10 shooting from the free throw line. Ingram added 14 points and four rebounds. Bilbo had 10 points, while Dailey had five boards and four assists. Renkin led IUP with 15 points.
 
As a team, the Lakers shot 17-35 (49 percent) from the floor and Indiana hit 18-40 (45 percent) of its attempts. Mercyhurst converted 16-19 free throws. The teams evenly shared 42 rebounds.
 
Coach Gary Manchel's squad dropped to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in the PSAC. IUP is now 15-2 overall and 11-2 in the league. Mercyhurst hosts Edinboro on Wednesday, January 30, in another PSAC Western Division match. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the MAC.
