Men's Hoops Travels to Rival Gannon for Wednesday Showdown

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team heads to rival Gannon for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division game on Wednesday, January 23. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Hammermill Center.

Mercyhurst is 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the conference. It lost, 56-48, at Slippery Rock on Saturday. Luis Leao had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Paul Bilbo scored 12 points. The Lakers defeated Clarion, 62-49, at home on Wednesday. They ended the game on a 13-0 run in the last six minutes. Jonathan Ouegnin posted 16 points and four assists.
 
Gannon has a 14-3 overall record and 8-3 in the PSAC. It beat California (Pa.), 82-59, at home on Saturday. Four Golden Knights scored in double figures, led by Darrell Blanton, who had 19 points and eight boards. Blanton was named PSAC Western Division Athlete of the Week on Monday. GU traveled to Edinboro on Wednesday and came away with a 86-63 victory. Algeron Torrence came off the bench to score 24 points for the Knights.
 
Leao paces Mercyhurst with 20.7 points (second in the PSAC) and 7.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 52.9 percent from the floor and 83.6 percent from the free throw line. The senior is adding just over one blocked shot and one steal per outing. Ouegnin is averaging 8.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. The Paris, France, native is shooting 58.4 percent from the floor and 81.3 percent from the foul line.
 
For the Knights, Blanton leads the way with 16.6 points and 6.6 boards per contest. The forward is connecting on a league-best 63.3 percent from the field. Robert Wilson, Adam Blazek, and Oscar Macias are each averaging over 10 points per game. Wilson leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per outing.
 
Mercyhurst is allowing 62 points a game, good for fourth in the PSAC. It is shooting 46.5 percent from the field-second-best in the conference.
 
As a team, Gannon is outscoring its opponents by a PSAC-leading 14.2 points per game. It is allowing 58.7 points, second-fewest in the league. The Knights lead the conference in field goal percentage (50.5 percent) and field goal percentage defense (37.8 percent).
 
The Lakers swept the season series last year and have won their last two games at the Hammermill Center.
