ERIE, Pa. - Freshman Cayla Slade's first collegiate goal with 9:23 left in regulation proved to be the only goal of the game, as the Mercyhurst field hockey team posted a 1-0 shutout victory over Bellarmine University on Saturday at Tullio Field. It marked Mercyhurst's first win of the season, lifting the team's record to 1-2 on the year. The Knights, who defeated Mercyhurst earlier in the week, dropped to 2-3 on the season.

Slade was able to pick up a loose ball just in front of Bellarmine goalkeeper Paris Bryant and then knocked it home with a backhander for the only goal of the contest. A great initial rush by sophomore Allison Brace set up the winning goal for the Lakers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Wess took care of the rest, turning aside eight Bellarmine shots for her first career shutout. She improved to 1-2 on the season. Wess stopped six shots in the first half and two more in the second to secure the shutout win.

Wess lowered her goals against average to 2.00 and increased her save percentage to .800 on the season.

The contest was evenly played throughout the afternoon and the final score reflected that. Mercyhurst held advantages in total shots, 14-13, and corners, 13-12, while shots on goal for the game were tied at eight apiece.

The Lakers will host Seton Hill on Tuesday, September 11 beginning at 4:00 p.m. from Tullio Field.
