Field Hockey Falls, 6-2, at #8 IUP Wednesday Afternoon

INDIANA, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team lost, 6-2, at #8 Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon. Meghan Smith and Tesa Ramsdell each scored for the Lakers in the loss.
 
IUP got going early, scoring less than three minutes into the match. However, the visitors used penalty corners to their advantage. Marissa Faso inserted four tries, cashing in on the last attempt. Faso hit Smith for her first goal of the season, tying the score 15 minutes in.
 
The Crimson Hawks came back with a set of penalty corners of their own a few minutes later. Eventually, Paige Mosner found the back of the net on a redirect. Less than 30 seconds later, Chelsea Wanamaker made it 3-1. With the first half winding down, the hosts added another score for a three-goal halftime lead.
 
IUP continued its pressure in the second half, as Casey McGowan converted a penalty stroke at the 49:01 mark. The Lakers bounced back, though, as Kelley Hynes put a shot on goal, leading to a Ramsdell score at the 65:23 mark. Mosner closed the scoring a few minutes after that, giving Indiana a 6-2 advantage.
 
Smith tried three shots, putting two on goal, while Kelsey Lovelace attempted three shots of her own. Jessica Richards and Jess Wess each played a half in net, with Richards making five saves in her first start of the year.
 
The Lakers dropped to 0-2 with the defeat, while IUP improved to 2-1 this season.
 
Mercyhurst hosts Bellarmine in its 2012 home opener on Saturday, September 8. The non-league contest is set for a 1 p.m. start at Tullio Field.
