Field Hockey Drops Season Opener, 3-1, at Bellarmine Monday

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Mercyhurst University field hockey team lost, 3-1, at Bellarmine in the 2012 opener Monday afternoon. Brittney Randolph scored her first career goal for the Lakers.

Marissa Faso put a shot on net six minutes into the first half, but Knights goalie Paris Bryant made the save. Mercyhurst's Jess Wess went to work after that, making a save in the ninth minute and another a minute later.

At the 19:49 mark, Alex Ojeda put Bellarmine on the board. After Wess made several more stops, Meghan Williams put in a rebound of her own shot for a 2-0 advantage.

In the second half, Wess saw more action, making three saves early in the frame. After the hosts controlled play in the first 12 minutes of the half, the Lakers had a chance, and took advantage of it. At the 50:17 mark, Faso inserted a penalty corner to Meghan Smith, who hit Randolph for the team's first goal of the season. It also marked the first Mercyhurst goal for Randolph, a junior.

Coach Stacey's Gaudette's squad had two more corner opportunities, but could not cash in. Eventually, Ojeda put the match away with her second score at the 65:47 mark.

On the day, the Knights (2-2) outshot Mercyhurst 27-7. Wess made 13 saves, including 10 in the first half.

Bellarmine will make the trip to Erie on Saturday, September 8, for the Mercyhurst home opener. Prior to that, the Lakers travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a 4 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match on Wednesday.
