Volleyball Rolls to Two More Victories Saturday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won two matches in dominating fashion Saturday at the Ferris State Invitational. The Lakers beat Glenville State in straight sets and then swept Northwood to open 2012 with a 3-1 record.

In the first match, the Lakers cruised to a sweep by scores of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-17. Coach Ryan Patton used his bench throughout the contest, as 17 different players saw action. Kiera Rebert continued her strong weekend with 33 assists and two aces. Sarah Vick and Becky Leusch each had nine kills, while Camille Alvarez had eight kills, three aces and 14 digs. As a team, Mercyhurst hit .287 for the match. In the first game, the Lakers had 13 kills and zero attack errors.

Against Northwood, Mercyhurst won by scores of 25-17, 25-23, and 32-30. Amanda Balasko had seven kills and 14 digs, while Rebert had 25 assists. Leusch totaled eight kills to lead the team. The Lakers held the Timberwolves to .008 hitting for the contest.

Leusch and Elyse Texido were both named to the all-tournament team, honoring the top players from the two-day event. Leusch compiled 32 kills in the four matches, while Texido had 70 digs, including a career-high 35 in the team's five-set victory over #14 Ferris State Friday night.

Mercyhurst comes back to Erie for the Mercyhurst Gannon Invitational September 7-8. The Lakers host four matches in two days at the MAC.
