PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - According to a tweet from his agent on Monday, former Mercyhurst men's hockey defenseman Cullen Eddy has signed his first-ever National Hockey League contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. Eddy played the last two seasons under an American Hockey League (AHL) contract only.
The contract is a two-year, two-way agreement. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
A native of Hidden Valley, Pennsylvania, Eddy has spent a majority of the past two seasons with the Flyers' AHL affiliate, Adirondack, with an occasional trip to the East Coast Hockey League's Greenville Road Warriors. In 54 games with the Phantoms last season, Eddy posted two goals and 13 assists for 15 points, while registering 130 penalty minutes. During the 2010-11 season, Eddy recorded three goals and seven assists in 47 games with the Phantoms.
Eddy played his last season with Mercyhurst during the 2009-10 season, finishing his career with 49 points (9 goals, 40 assists) in 144 career games played. He had a career-high 16 points as a freshman during the 2006-07 season (5 goals, 11 assists) and was named to the Atlantic Hockey Association's All-Rookie Team that season.
This past April, Eddy was also named the Adirondack Phantoms' winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Glens Falls community.
Eddy's appearances included multiple visits to the Glens Falls Hospital Pediatric Unit where he was happy to brighten the day of those that were down. He also connected with the area's youth and was terrific in leading full-school assemblies at Abraham Wing Elementary and Granville Elementary, in which he talked about the importance of hard work and staying in school. Eddy has read to classes at Corinth Middle School and has been a guest on the Phantoms Weekly Radio Show. He also helped the Phantoms raise money for The C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital as part of the Phantoms' Pink in the Rink promotion.
With the signing, Eddy now has an opportunity to become the second Mercyhurst player to appear in a National Hockey League contest, joining former defenseman Jamie Hunt, who appeared in one game with the Washington Capitals during the 2006-07 season.
