Women's Rowing Drops To Third In Latest Division II Rankings

The Mercyhurst women's rowing team dropped to third in the latest NCAA Division II rankings.
ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's rowing team dropped one spot in the latest Division II rankings, and is currently ranked third in the country according to the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, presented by Pocock Racing Shells.

Mercyhurst was leapfrogged by Humboldt State, who was previously third, in the latest rankings. However, the Lakers did garner a first-place vote, something that had not occurred in the first two polls of the season.

“I can understand why people put Humboldt above us, they have raced very well so far and they won at the San Diego Crew Classic this past weekend," said Mercyhurst head coach Adrian Spracklen. "I find it quite amusing that we dropped in the rankings to number three, yet someone voted us first. There is a reason it is called a poll, as it is asking for an individual's opinion of who they think is fast now. There is so much to play for and it just creates a buzz and a talking point at practice; it's fun."

The Mercyhurst women's rowing team got its spring season underway on Saturday, March 31, by capturing a gold medal in the women's varsity eight event at the Neuweiler Plate held at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. The team captured gold with a time of 6:43:98, which was well ahead of the rest of the field. Lehigh, who finished second in the event, was nearly 11 seconds (6:54.16) behind the Lakers' gold medal finish. Philadelphia University, Franklin & Marshall, Penn State, and Lafayette rounded out the field.

Mercyhurst will continue its season at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on Saturday, April 14.
