Women's Lacrosse Drops 14-13 Heartbreaker to #14 Gannon

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team  lost, 14-13, to #14 Gannon Saturday. A late Laker rally was not enough as the Lady Knights held on in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and regular season finale at Tullio Field.

The game was back and forth throughout, with neither going up more than two goals until the final seven minutes of the match. Trailing 14-11 as the clock ran down, the Lakers put together a push to get back in the contest. Anna LeGrett finished an Alisha Catalino pass and then Kayla Minner converted a free position shot with 1:13 left to make it 14-13. Gannon won the ensuing draw control and Mercyhurst could not force a turnover as the visitors ran out the clock.

Rebecca Himes began the day with a goal 58 seconds in. Rachel DerCola answered for Gannon and then Jess Fugate put GU ahead 2-1 with 26:24 remaining in the first half. Minner evened the score and then Ally Keirn found the back of the net a few minutes later. Catalino stretched the lead to 4-2 with 15:27 to go.

The Knights quickly tied the match at 4 before Himes regained the Lakers' edge with 10:30 showing on the clock. After a Gannon goal, Hannah Corton and Kelly Palmer made free position tries to make it 7-5. The visitors capped the first half with a score as Mercyhurst went into the half with a 7-6 edge.

Himes put the hosts ahead, 8-6, 1:22 into the second frame, but Gannon responded with four consecutive scores to take a 10-8 advantage with 22:25 to play. Palmer got Mercyhurst within one, but Stevie Lombardoni scored to regain control.

Himes' fourth goal of the game made it 11-10 and then Keirn scored off a LeGrett pass to tie it at 11 with 15:28 remaining. The Knights then scored three straight to go up 14-11.

Himes finished with four goals and Palmer had two goals and an assist. Keirn and Minner each scored twice. Jenny Perkins made 10 saves in net. DerCola led GU with two goals and four helpers. Mercyhurst totaled 40 shots to Gannon's 30 and won 19 of 30 draw controls.

Mercyhurst dropped to 11-6 overall and 8-3 in the conference. It hosts Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday, May 1, at 4 p.m. in a first round PSAC Tournament contest. Gannon earned the third seed in the PSAC and will host Bloomsburg on May 1.
