Leao's 29 Points Not Enough as Men's Hoops Falls at M'Ville

Box Score

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team lost, 72-60, at Millersville Wednesday night. Senior Luis Leao scored 29 points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest.

Paul Bilbo made a layup to begin scoring and then Leao hit a jumper for a 4-2 lead at the 18:27 mark. The Marauders took the lead after that, going ahead 9-4 on a Jaymes Miller tip-in. A Brandon Brown three-pointer gave the hosts a 15-6 advantage with 13:26 remaining. Treys by Terrence Ingram and Leao cut the deficit and then Jonathan Ouegnin and Leao each hit a pair from the foul line.

The Leao free throws began a personal 7-0 run by the senior from Brusque, Brazil. He finished a three-point play at the 4:35 mark and followed with a jump shot to give the Lakers a 21-19 edge. Two Keith Ellington free throws put the visitors up, but Larry Grant's trey made it 26-24 Millersville. Leao hit four free throws and later a three-point play in the final minute. Brown's layup made it 32-30 Mercyhurst at the break.

Bilbo's jumper began the second half scoring. After two Marauder hoops, Bilbo converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 16:15 to go. A Grant three began to turn the tide, giving the home team a 45-40 lead as the Marauders eventually expanded their advantage to 51-40 with just over 10 minutes left. The Lakers offense stalled from there, as Millersville took the crossover victory.

Leao was 7-15 from the field and 14-15 from the free throw line. He also hit a three-pointer on his way to 29 points. He pulled down seven rebounds in the defeat. Bilbo added 11 points and three blocked shots. Ingram posted nine points and eight boards. Miller led the Marauders with 18 points on 9-9 shooting.

The Lakers (6-4, 3-2 PSAC) next play on Sunday, December 30. They host Notre Dame College in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. at the MAC.
