Volleyball Takes Down IUP in Five Games Friday Night

INDIANA, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won at Indiana (Pa.) in five games Friday night. The Lakers won by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, and 15-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division match.
 
In the decisive fifth game, Nicole Texido got the Lakers rolling with six points to start the frame. Two kills by Becky Leusch sparked the rally. Becky Smith posted two kills to make it 10-2. She followed with a kill and an ace for a 13-7 advantage. Kills by Veronica Crosby and Leusch capped the night with a road victory for Mercyhurst.
 
Leusch led with 19 kills, while Smith had 16. Kelly Vitt and Kiera Rebert combined for 51 assists, while Elyse Texido collected 30 digs. As a team, the Lakers hit .270 in the match.
 
The win makes Mercyhurst 25-8 this season. That win total is the most since 1993. The last time the Lakers won more than 25 matches was the 1991 campaign, when they won 28.
 
The Lakers play at California (Pa.) tomorrow in the regular season finale for both teams. Mercyhurst and Cal have each clinched PSAC Tournament berths.
