ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won two matches Friday afternoon at Gannon University. The Lakers beat Kutztown in four games and then swept Cheyney.
Against the Golden Bears, Mercyhurst won by scores of 25-22, 25-15, 16-25, and 29-27. After winning the first two sets, Kutztown bounced back with a win in the third frame and pushed the fourth game to extra points. The teams traded points throughout the set, with the score being tied at 10, 15, and 20 apiece. The Lakers had match point at 24-23, but an attack error continued the contest. The Bears answered with match point at 26-25, but a service error allowed the Lakers to stay alive. Each posted a kill and then
Amanda Balasko's kill made it 28-27 Mercyhurst. A KU attack error closed the match in the Lakers' favor.
Kiera Rebert dished out 45 assists and collected 12 digs. Balasko totaled 14 kills and 10 digs.
Sarah Vick had 10 kills and
Camille Alvarez had 14 digs.
In the Cheyney match, the Lakers won by scores of 25-3, 25-15, and 25-12. Freshmen
Erin Byrnes and
Lexi Stefanov led the way, combining for 21 kills.
Kelsi Romatowski added nine kills. Another freshman,
Kelly Vitt, compiled 27 assists, while
Tai Lattimore had 15 digs. As a team, the Lakers hit .374 in the match, while Cheyney hit .000 in the three games.
Mercyhurst (15-6 overall, 3-4 PSAC) returns to the court tomorrow, facing West Chester at 12 p.m. in another neutral site match at Gannon.
