Field Hockey Can't Overcome Mansfield in 7-2 Loss Saturday

MANSFIELD, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey concluded its 2012 season with a 7-2 loss at Mansfield Saturday afternoon. Kelley Hynes and Meghan Smith scored for the Lakers in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division game.
 
Jess Wess was tested early in the first half, making three saves in the first 11 minutes of action. Mercyhurst responded with a goal on its first shot of the day. Hynes found the back of the net from 10 yards out on the right side for a 1-0 Laker edge at the 13:29 mark.
 
Mansfield came back with the tying score a few minutes later and then scored in the final minute of first half play for a 2-1 advantage.
 
The Mountaineers had a strong start to the second period, scoring twice in the first seven minutes. Brianna Velepec made it 5-1 at the 45:25 mark. The hosts added two more goals before the Lakers scored with 16 seconds remaining in the match. Marissa Faso inserted a penalty corner to Smith, who lifted a shot over the goalkeeper's head for the goal.
 
Mercyhurst went 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the PSAC West this season.
