Volleyball Sweeps Edinboro Saturday for Fifth Straight Win

EDINBORO, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won, 3-0, at Edinboro Saturday afternoon. The Lakers won by scores of 25-19, 25-11, and 25-23 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division match.
 
Mercyhurst came out with a stellar first game to take the lead. As a unit, it hit .387 and totaled 16 kills on the way to a six-point win.
 
The Laker defense controlled the second set, containing the Scots to a -.104 hitting percentage as Mercyhurst won 25-11. Becky Smith finished the game with seven straight serves as Veronica Crosby had two kills and Sarah Vick totaled three to close the set.
 
The visitors took an early advantage in the third game, going up 9-1. Edinboro slowly made up the deficit, eventually tying the score at 19. Two Scots attack errors gave the Lakers control before the hosts recorded a kill. Kelsi Romatowski made it 22-20 with a kill from Kiera Rebert. Amanda Balasko recorded a kill between two Edinboro points. Lexi Stefanov's kill made it 24-22. Edinboro got within one, but Stefanov capped the contest with a kill from Kelly Vitt.
 
Vick led the Lakers with nine kills and Smith had eight. Vitt dished out 22 assists and Elyse Texido had 16 digs.
 
Mercyhurst has won its last five outings and improved to 18-6 overall and 6-5 in the conference. Edinboro dropped to 7-16 overall and 5-6 in the PSAC.
 
The Lakers begin a six-match home stand on Friday, October 19, against California (Pa.). The PSAC contest is set for a 7:05 p.m. first serve.
