ERIE, Pa. - Bloomsburg scored four times over a span of 12 minutes late in the second half to secure an 11-9 upset victory over the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College women's lacrosse team Tuesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup at Tullio Field.
Less than six minutes after senior
Kimberly Masterton regained the lead for Mercyhurst at 8-7, the Huskies stunned the Lakers with the next four goals, beginning with a successful free-position attempt by Kelsey Metzler at 14:24. Samantha King and Sarah Bennett connected at 13:20 and 7:54, and Metzler closed out the longest run by either team at 4:16.
Sophomore
Alisha Catalino made it a two-goal game shortly after, as she picked up a loose ball on the doorstep and beat the Husky netminder, Sara Bates, with 3:34 showing on the clock.
The Lakers, standing at 7-3 overall, 3-2 in PSAC play, rolled out to an early advantage in the first half before both teams went into the break with a 4-4 score. Jessica Lincoln wiped out the effort and restored the two-goal lead on an unassisted play at 18:42.
Bloomsburg bounced back from deficit by outscoring the Lakers 3-1 over the final 17 minutes of the half. Sam Mazzie and junior
Ally Keirn traded goals at 16:58 and 14:22 before Samantha King took over by netting the final two tallies of the frame at 9:02 and 2:15.
After the break, Mercyhurst looked to right the ship with two of the next three scores, beginning Masterton's third of the afternoon just under two minutes in. Following a strike from Aubrey Bossert, sophomore
Kayla Minner made it a 6-5 game in favor of the Lakers.
Both teams then reeled off consecutive goals, with MC taking the lead, 8-7, on counter strikes courtesy of Catalino and Masterton with 19 minutes to play.
Offensively, Masterton led all players with four goals and five points. Keirn scored once and dished out two assists, while Catalino netted a pair of goals. Minner and Lincoln recorded one goal each.
Junior
Jenny Perkins suffered the loss in net with eight saves and 11 goals allowed, Bates, on the other hand, stopped four shots through 60 minutes of play. Bloomsburg finished the game with a 22-19 advantage in shots and a 13-9 edge in draw controls.
Mercyhurst will look to snap its two-game skid this weekend when it faces East Stroudsburg in a conference matchup on Saturday, Apr. 2 in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
