Lakers Suffer 3-2 Setback to Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team suffered its third straight loss Friday evening, falling to Canisius 3-2 in an Atlantic Hockey Association matchup at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Despite outshooting the Golden Griffins 45-40 for the game, the Lakers were held to just two goals as goaltender Dan Morrison recorded 43 saves for his second straight win.

Sophomores Paul Chiasson and Grant Blakey both scored for the Lakers, who now fall to 13-16-4 overall, 11-13-2 in AHA play.

Canisius put the Lakers in an early hole with back-to-back goals that bridged the first and second periods. Cory Conacher got the home team rolling with his 20th of the season 25 seconds into the first period. After the break, Scott Moser made it a 2-0 game off to an assist from Conacher at the 6:04 mark of the second.

Chiasson cut the deficit in half with 5:49 to play in the second, converting a play set up by freshman Taylor Holstrom and senior captain Scott Pitt.

Following another from Conacher to open the third, the Lakers got their second of the game as Blakey found the back of the net with the extra attacker with 1:04 showing on the clock.

Senior Ryan Zapolski posted 37 saves in goal for Mercyhurst, which held Canisius scoreless on two power-play attempts. The Lakers finished 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Both teams close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Prior to the game, the Lakers will honor their senior class during a pregame ceremony.
