ERIE, Pa. – Robert Morris' Trevor Lewis scored two goals in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime and lead the Colonials to a 4-4 come from behind tie against the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team Saturday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Trailing 4-2 with the goaltender pulled, Lewis rallied the Colonials by scoring his eighth and ninth goals of the season with less than two minutes to play at the 18:02 and 18:59 marks of the third period.
Both teams then skated scoreless through the five-minute overtime session, forcing the squads to settle for a point apiece in the Atlantic Hockey Association standings.
The late rally wiped out an impressive effort by the Lakers (13-13-4, 11-10-2 AHA), who led 3-1 in the first period and 4-2 at the end of the second against the league's second-ranked team.
After combining for five goals the night before, Mercyhurst and Robert Morris accounted for four alone in the first period Saturday.
Redshirt sophomore
Phil Ginand gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead when he connected off a long pass from senior
Ryan Raven and drove the net before tapping in his own rebound with just 35 seconds elapsed. RMU countered shortly after though, as Furman South scored to make it a 1-1 game at the 1:36 mark.
The Lakers then added a pair of scores just 38 seconds apart to take a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission. Senior captain
Scott Pitt scored his first of two goals in the game when he knocked home a loose puck on the doorstep at 17:20. Junior
Derek Elliott followed suit at 17:58, unleashing a shot setup by seniors
Mike Gurtler and
Jeff Terminesi.
Both teams would trade goals in the second period. RMU's Colin South converted the Colonials' first power-play opportunity of the game at 15:36, while Pitt restored the two-goal advantage on tic-tac-toe play set up by freshman
Taylor Holstrom and sophomore
Paul Chiasson at 16:02.
Mercyhurst commanded play in the contest with an offense that outshot the Colonials 40-37, including 30-20 through the first two periods. The Lakers also spent 12 minutes of regulation on the power play, converting 1-for-6 for the game. RMU finished 1-for-3.
Senior
Ryan Zapolski posted 33 saves and allowed one even-strength score while moving to 11-10-3 on the season. Brooks Ostergard, on the other hand, finished with 36 saves.
Mercyhurst plays three of its final four games of the season at home, beginning next weekend with a two-game series against Air Force on Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
