MANSFIELD, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team won at Mansfield, 66-47, Friday evening at Decker Gymnasium. The Lakers used a 20-0 run midway through the first half and
Megan Hoffman scored 19 points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game.
After
Lindsey Burke nailed a triple for a five-point Hurst advantage, the Mountaineers went on a 6-0 run capped by a Jena Matter layup with 9:59 remaining. Hoffman answered with a jump shot for a 15-14 lead.
Kelsey Trosch hit two free throws and then Burke's putback gave the visitors a 19-14 lead.
Dana Banda's layup and
Katie Carbee's jumper led to a
Lindsay Stamp trey and a 12-point edge.
Adele Campbell and Carbee each made layups and then Stamp drilled another three for a 33-14 advantage with 3:11 left in the half. The Mountaineers went 7:58 without scoring in the stretch.
Hoffman and Stamp closed the frame with three-pointers for a 39-19 lead.
Mercyhurst kept the pressure on early in the second half, as Frederickson's layups sandwiched a Hoffman triple. With 11:45 to play, Hoffman hit another three for a 50-29 Hurst edge. Mallory Moore hit two free throws, Julia Stevenson made a layup and then Moore connected from deep to cut the deficit to 12. Carbee slowed the run with a layup and then Banda expanded the lead with a three-pointer. Hoffman followed with her fifth three of the night, putting the Lakers up 58-40 in the process.
Hoffman started the game with a three-pointer 13 seconds in and then gave her team a 5-2 lead with a jumper in the next minute. Mansfield's Mallory Moore hit two free throws to put the home team up 8-6 at the 15:36 mark.
Nikki Frederickson followed with a tying layup and then Banda made a layup for a 10-8 edge.
Hoffman shot 7-12 from the field, including 5-10 from downtown, in 30 minutes. Her five treys tie a career high. Stamp and Burke each finished with nine points, while Banda and Carbee scored eight apiece. Carbee pulled down six rebounds and
Abby Allen dished out a career-high seven assists.
Moore led the Mountaineers with 16 points, but on 3-12 shooting. Stevenson was next with 14 points in the loss.
As a team, the Lakers shot 50.0 (26-52) percent from the floor and made 10 three-pointers. Mansfield hit just 17-60 (28.3 percent) tries and 3-19 (15.8 percent) shots from deep. Mercyhurst also used a 30-4 edge in bench points.
Hurst (3-4, 3-2 PSAC) plays again tomorrow at Bloomsburg. The PSAC contest is set for 2 p.m. at Nelson Field House.
