Men's Hockey Comeback Falls Short Against Robert Morris

Sophomore Trent Frey scored his first collegiate goal on Saturday against Robert Morris.
OMAHA, Neb. - The Mercyhurst men's hockey team dropped to 0-2 on the season, suffering a 2-1 loss against Atlantic Hockey rival Robert Morris in the consolation game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede on Saturday evening.

The tournament was hosted by the University of Nebraska-Omaha, who knocked off the Lakers 5-1 on Friday night  to advance to the championship game. Robert Morris suffered a 3-1 setback to Colgate in the first game on Friday.

Mercyhurst trailed 2-0 before sophomore Trent Frey scored his first collegiate goal with 6:40 left in the third period to cut the Colonial lead in half. The Lakers pulled starting goaltender Max Strang with 51 seconds left in regulation, but could not net the equalizer.

After a scoreless first period, Robert Morris finally solved Strang at the 9:55 mark of the second period, when Zach Hervato lit the lamp for his first goal of the season. Trevor Lewis had the lone assist.

It remained a 1-0 Colonial lead until Adam Brace scored his first goal of the season 59 seconds into the third period. Ron Cramer and Brendan Jamison had the assists.

Frey broke up the Robert Morris' Eric Levine's shutout bid at the 13:20 mark off an assist from Daniel Bahntge. Frey had three assists in 14 games last season as a freshman, while Bahntge assist marked the freshman's first career point.

Strang played well, stopping 23 of 25 Robert Morris shots in the loss. He dropped to 0-2 on the season. Levine, meanwhile, stopped 29 Mercyhurst shots to pick up his first win of the season. Mercyhurst outshot Robert Morris 30-25, one night after being outshot by Nebraska-Omaha 44-18. Neither team was able to capitalize on two power play opportunities.

Mercyhurst will be looking for its first win of the season next weekend, as they travel to Fairbanks, Alaska for the Brice Alaska Goal Rush. The Lakers will play the hosts, Alaska, on Friday night at 8:05 Alaska time, and then will play Alaska-Anchorage on Saturday at 4:05 Alaska time.
