Lakers Drop Heartbreaker at Gannon, 2-0

ERIE, Pa. –  Gannon scored a pair of goals in the last 10 minutes Saturday to hand Mercyhurst a 2-0 setback,  the Lakers sixth loss in the last eight games. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 10-7-0 overall and 4-5-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.  Meanwhile, the Golden Knights improve to 7-9-2 overall this season and 3-5-1 in the PSAC.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Knights finally broke through the defense of the Lakers at the 80:37 minute mark when Sean Washek of Gannon punched the ball to the left side of the net beating Laker junior goalkeeper Diego Gustin

The Lakers pressured the Gannon defense for the next nine minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.  After a final attempt by the Lakers misfired, Gannon wound up with a breakaway and forward Robbie Bennett sealed the contest with just 31 ticks remaining in regulation.

Both keepers made outstanding saves throughout the match to keep it scoreless until the last 10 minutes.  Gustin posted three second half saves while his counterpart Michael Kickel made seven saves in the winning effort.  Gustin now owns a 10-5-0 record while Kickel displays a 7-9-2 season record.

Mercyhurst's offense applied constant pressure throughout the match as they took six shots in the first half and 11 in the second.  The defense for the Lakers held the Golden Knights to just one shot in the first half and seven in the second.  Mercyhurst also held the corner kick advantage, 5-3.

The contest ended the regular season.
