EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – East Stroudsburg overcame an 11-point deficit in the last 57 seconds of regulation to force overtime, then hung on in the extra session to take an 88-86 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action Tuesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (7-3) freshman guard Will Brown made three 3-pointers in the final 28 seconds, including the game-tying trey with four seconds left to send the game into overtime. There, ESU outscored the Lakers (8-2) by a 10-8 count for the victory to snap Mercyhurst's four-game winning streak.
Brown was one of five ESU players in double-figures as Mike Tobin led the Warriors with 19 points, and Duane Johnson and Mike DeMarco each added 12, and Marcus Brown contributed 10 markers.
For the Lakers, senior guard
Heiden Ratner posted a game-high 25 points while
Shelton Jackson added 23 tallies and
Luis Leao chipped in 19 markers.
Mercyhurst shot over 50 percent from the field for the game, hitting 29-of-56, but connected on just 6-of-17 from 3-point land in comparison to ESU's 11-of-23 performance from 3-point land.
The Lakers led by nine at halftime after back-and-forth battles that saw six ties in the first half. No team led by more than four until Leao's jumper at 4:01 gave the Lakers a 32-27 lead. From there, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run in the final 1:37 of the half.
In the second, the Lakers enjoyed a 14-point lead with 13:22 remaining but could not close out a charging ESU squad in the final minutes. Mercyhurst could not connect on a field goal in the final 3:22 of the game and committed six turnovers in that span to aid the Warrior comeback.
Mercyhurst returns home this weekend for the final two crossover contests of the year, hosting Mansfield on Saturday, Jan. 8 before hosting Bloomsburg on Sunday, Jan. 9. Tipoff for both days is set for 3 p.m.
