Falcons Pin 3-2 Setback on Men's Hockey

WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as Bentley skated to a 3-2 victory over the Lakers on Saturday evening at Ryan Skating Arena.

Freshman Daniel O'Donoghue and senior captain Scott Pitt both scored for the Lakers, who now fall to 11-12-2 overall, 9-9-0 in Atlantic Hockey Association play.

Senior Ryan Zapolski recorded 45 saves, including 20 in the first period when Mercyhurst was outshot 20-4. Bentley finished the game with a 48-24 advantage in shots.

Bentley rebounded from an 8-2 loss the night before and dealt the Lakers their first loss since Jan. 7 thanks to a pair of goals just 14 seconds apart in the second period and an early strike in the third period.

After skating to a 0-0 tie in the first period, Bentley got its offense going late in the second. Joe Camapanelli and Brett Hartung scored back-to-back goals at the 14:31 and 14:45 marks to give the home team a brief 2-0 advantage.

Mercyhurst responded to the Bentley rush with both of its goals over a span that bridged the second and third period. O'Donoghue broke the ice for Mercyhurst when he scored with just two seconds remaining in the second, while Pitt found the back of the net with 1:35 elapsed in the third, tying the game at 2-2.

The Falcons, however, snapped the tie 25 seconds after Pitt created it, as Dan Koudys beat Zapolski with the eventual game-winner at 2:00.

For the game, both teams were held scoreless on the power play. Mercyhurst finished 0-for-5 while Bentley went 0-for-2.

Mercyhurst continues its four-game road trip next weekend with a game at RIT.
