WORCESTER, Mass. – The ninth-ranked Mercyhurst College field hockey team posted its second straight season-opening victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Assumption College, 2-0, in a non-conference match-up at Multi-Sport Stadium. The Lakers outshot the Greyhounds 32-3 and saw two players score their first collegiate goals.
Freshman
Bridgette McLean and sophomore
Tesa Ramsdell both scored their first goals in a Laker uniform and helped an offense register the most shots under the direction of eighth-year head coach
Stacey Gaudette.
McLean sealed the Laker win when she beat Danielle Luongo on an unassisted play at the 18:59 mark of the first half. Ramsdell later tacked on an insurance goal in the second half, scoring with just over 10 minutes elapsed.
While the offense controlled the pace of the game, junior
Ashley Wiskup had an easy day in goal, only having to make one save for her sixth career shutout and 11th career victory at Mercyhurst. Luongo, on the other hand, had a career day, turning aside 24 shots despite falling to 0-2 on the season.
Along with their shot advantage, the Lakers also held a 9-3 edge in penalty corners and committed one less foul than the Greyhounds (27-26).
The Lakers continue their Massachusetts tour on Sunday, Sept. 5, when they face American International at 12 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
