Lakers Top Warriors, 2-0

ERIE, Pa. – Junior Paige McDowell scored two goals to lead the Mercyhurst College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over East Stroudsburg Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. With the win, the Lakers snap their three-game losing streak and improve 6-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

McDowell, the team's leading scorer, netted her seventh and eighth goals less than 17 minutes apart and marked her second multi-goal game of the season as the Lakers found the back of the net for the first time in three games.

The Lakers and Warriors went back and forth through the first half, with the home team holding a 9-8 shot advantage.

After several attempts on net, the Lakers broke through in the 41st minute, when junior Molly Marsh sent a pass up field to McDowell, who quickly spun a defender and rifled it past an outstretched ESU netminder with 41:03 showing on the clock.

McDowell would make it 2-0 later in the second half, scoring on an unassisted play at the 52:02 mark.

Mercyhurst kept the lead intact by possessing the ball through the remainder of the half while upping its shot total from 9-8 at the end of the first half to 21-14 for the game. Junior Rachel Griepsma recorded her fifth shutout of the season with seven saves through 90 minutes. She is now 6-4 on the season.

Mercyhurst continues conference play on Saturday, Oct. 2, with a 2 p.m. contest at Bloomsburg.
