ERIE, Pa. -- The city rivalry was in full effect Saturday night as the Mercyhurst College women's volleyball team outlasted Gannon, 3-2, in front of packed Mercyhurst Athletic Center celebrating Homecoming and Family weekend.
Mercyhurst (10-3, 4-1 PSAC West) handed Gannon (9-3, 4-1 PSAC West) its first conference defeat of the season in a five-set thriller that saw the Lakers take set 1 25-22 before the Golden Knights rebounded with the next two sets, 25-23 and 25-17. However, the Lakers surged out to a quick lead in the deciding set and never looked back as they hung on for an 15-11 win in the set and the match after a 25-22 win in the fourth.

Becky Leusch# again provided the 1-2 punch for the Lakers' offense, contributing 13 and 12 kills, respectively. #
Kiera Rebert# effectively led the offense in her role as setter, throwing down 31 helpers. #
Becky Smith# had an amazing all-around game with seven kills in 19 tries against one error while igniting the Lakers' offense with four service aces. Defensively Smith excelled at the net, registering a shared team-high five blocks and four digs.
Libero #
Kendall Ashworth# paced the team with 27 digs while four others aided with seven or more.
Next up for the Lakers is a road game at Lake Erie on Sept. 28.
