Volleyball Opens PSAC Play This Homecoming Weekend

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst College women's volleyball team opens up its PSAC Western Division play this weekend traveling to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots Friday, Sept 24 at 7 p.m., before hosting Gannon University Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Mercyhurst enters into this weekend's competitions with a record of 10-2. 

Gannon was ranked No.3 in the 2010 PSAC pre-season poll, followed by Edinboro at No. 4 and Mercyhurst, who was ranked No. 5. Last season, the Lakers split the meetings with both the Fighting Scots and the Golden Knights, going 1-1with each team. Mercyhurst defeated Gannon in the last meeting to a score of 3-2, before being shut out by Edinboro, 3-0. 

The Fighting Scots come into the matchup at 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West. The Edinboro offense is led by outside hitter Seth Sullivan, who has posted a team-high 146 kills. As a defensive threat, Sullivan has totaled 94 digs and 16 total blocks. Junior setter Megan Osysko has 408 assists and is averaging 10.74 assists per game. Maureen Tilert leads the Fighting Scots defense with 223 digs. Angela Groshner has contributed 106 digs, 79 kills and 10 service aces. 

Gannon has posted an overall record of 9-2 on the season. Morgan Reineke leads the Gannon offense 116 kills. Lauren Sazama also stands as an offensive threat with 105 kills and a team-high 24 service aces. Setter Alex DelPiombo leads the Golden Knights with 297 assists. Senior defensive specialist Jess Saunders leads the Gannon defense with 121 digs. Defensive powerhouse Kara Cullen leads with a team-high 48 blocks. 

Chelsea Jensen leads the Lakers offense in kills and service aces, totaling 87 kills and 15 aces. Also contributing to the Lakers offense are Kiera Rebert, who leads the Lakers with 187 assists and Chelsea Hennigan, who is right behind Reberts with 172 assists. Defensively, the Lakers are led by Kendall Ashworth totaling 136 digs. The leading blocker for the Lakers is Becky Smith at 32 blocks, just in front of Justine Smith who has 30 blocks on the season.
