CHEYNEY, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College volleyball team opened up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 blanking of Cheyney University (25-10, 25-8, 25-8) before taking a 3-2 decision over Kutztown (25-18, 26-24, 16-25, 17-25, 15-7).

The Lakers' service game proved too powerful for the Wolves, with Gretta Freyermuth collecting six aces to lead the team.  Katie Powell added five aces and Kendra Kowalski contributed four.  Freyermuth and Sarah Vick led the team in kills with four each  while nine Lakers recorded at least one assist in the contest and another nine added at least with one dig.  Defensively, Veronica Crosby and Kelsi Romatowski deposited three blocks each.

Against Kutztown, the swinging duo of Becky Leusch and Chelsea Jensen helped keep the Lakers undefeated in PSAC play with 13 kills each.  Stacey Miozzi and Becky Smith also aided the offense, contributing nine and eight kills.  The setting duo of Chelsea Hennigan and Kiera Rebert# again proved efficient with 22 and 21 helpers, respectively.  Libero Kendall Ashworth paced the Lakers with 25 digs while Erin English led the team with three blocks.

The Lakers are next in action tomorrow when they wrap up conference play on the first crossover weekend with a match at West Chester.
