COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – 10th-ranked Colorado College used a three-goal outburst in the second period to turn aside the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team, 5-3, in front of a crowd of 6,072 on Saturday evening at the World Arena.
The Lakers fall to 12-16-2 on the season and close out their non-conference slate with a 0-8-0 record.

Matt Fennell and junior
Mike Gurtler led an offense that finished 3-for-5 on the power play. Fennell scored two goals to increase his season total to five, while Gurtler added his eighth of the year.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead on Gurtler's goal at the 5:34 mark of the first period, Mercyhurst could not contain four-straight goals by the Tigers.
CC's Tyler Johnson started the run with a power-play goal less than three minutes later at 8:02.
After the intermission, the Tigers broke open the game with three goals in a three minute and 14 second span. Andrew Hamburg, Brian McMillin and Mike Testwuide scored at 1:15, 3:00 and 4:29 to turn a 1-1 deadlock into a 4-1 advantage.
Fennell stifled the momentum and made the score 4-2 on an unassisted play at 10:28, but a second strike from Tyler Johnson at 19:04 of the third period put the home team up by three again.
Fennell closed out the game when he took a pass from Zapolski and beat Colorado College netminder Michael Shibrowski with 10 seconds remaining.
Zapolski, who came in relief of sophomore
Max Strang, played 34:27 with 20 saves. Strang suffered the loss with 17 saves through 24:29 seconds worth of action. Colorado College outshot Mercyhurst 42-34 and converted 2-for-8 on the power play.
Mercyhurst takes on Atlantic Hockey foe Canisius in a home-and-home series this weekend, beginning on Friday, Feb. 12 in Buffalo, N.Y., and concluding on Saturday, Feb. 13 in Erie, Pa.
