ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst College celebrated its Senior Night with a 4-2 men's hockey victory over visiting Army Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers spotted Army two goals before netting the next four for the come-from-behind win.
With the win, Mercyhurst is now 14-17-3, 14-9-3 in AHA play. The Lakers are currently in fourth place in league standings, three points ahead of Canisius, which has one game in hand. The Black Knights fall to 10-16-6, 9-12-5 in conference contests.
Mercyhurst honored its seven seniors during pre-game introductions. The seniors honored were:
Cody Collins,
Cullen Eddy,
Matt Fennell,
Derek Fisher,
Neil Graham,
Chris Risi, and
Nick Vandenbeld. Collins, Fennell and Graham registered points in their final regular-season home contest.
The Black Knights struck first, with Kyle Maggard taking a lead pass from Danny Colvin, then skating in alone on
Ryan Zapolski. Maggard beat the Laker goaltender at 12:55 for a 1-0 Army advantage. Army held a 10-4 edge in shots during the first 20 minutes.
Army stretched its lead to 2-0 on a skillful tic-tac-toe play which ended with Mike Hull stabbing home a cross-crease feed from Bryant Skarda at 5:18 of the second period. Owen Meyer began the play with a pass to Skarda.
Mercyhurst responded by scoring two goals in a 25 second span to tie the game at 2-2.
Ryan Raven scored a highlight-reel goal at 6:45. He soared in on a breakaway, accepting a pass from
Jeff Terminesi. His initial shot sailed over the cage, but the puck rebounded back out over the goal where Raven batted it in, just under the crossbar.
Collins stuffed a shot past Jay Clark on the doorstep at 7:10, making it a new hockey game at 2-2, with Graham and
Paul Chiasson assisting. Army held a slight 12-11 edge in second-period shots.
The Lakers took a 3-2 lead with a breakaway goal from Chiasson just 36 seconds into the third period. Graham hit him with a stretch pass, and Chiasson connected for his seventh goal of the season.
Kevin Noble gave the Lakers some breathing room at 14:56, blistering shot through traffic past Clark from the point for a 4-2 advantage.
Grant Blakey and
Derek Elliott drew assists on Noble's goal. Army threatened but was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Zapolski made 30 saves for his 14th win of the season. Army's Jay Clark yielded four goals for the second time in as many nights, parrying away 20 shots.
Blakey extended his point-scoring streak to seven games. Chiasson, Collins and Graham had two points apiece.
The Lakers finish their regular season schedule with a two-game series at UConn Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. Mercyhurst took both meetings at the Mercyhurst Ice Center, 5-0 and 3-1.
