ERIE, Pa. – Senior
Sara Wowkowych's goal with less than 13 minutes to play broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Mercyhurst College field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Seton Hill Monday afternoon at Tullio Field.
Wowkowych scored her second goal of the season and helped snap a two-game losing skid when she tipped in a shot from freshman
Meghan Smith at the 57:48 mark.
Prior to the goal, Mercyhurst had to turn the tables on Seton Hill after the Griffins controlled play in the first half, holding a 9-2 edge in shots. The Lakers came out of the break and went back and forth with their visitor before finding the back of the cage in the 57th minute.
Both Laker goalkeepers combined for the shutout victory, with junior
Ashley Wiskup earning the win despite facing no shots on goal. Sophomore
Jessica Richards started the game and recorded six saves in the first half.
Overall, Seton Hill held leads of 12-7 in shots and 10-4 in penalty corners.
Mercyhurst closes out its season on Saturday, Nov. 13, when it hosts Mansfield at 4:30 p.m. in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest at Tullio Field.
