Four-Goal Third Period Lifts No. 4 Lakers to 5-2 Win Over Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – A four-goal third period lifted the fourth-ranked Mercyhurst College women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over College Hockey America foe Wayne State Saturday afternoon at the City Sports Arena in Detroit, Mich.
 
The Lakers (9-2-0, 3-0-0 CHA) defeated the Warriors for the 12th straight time and overcame a 2-1 deficit with their largest third-period output of the season.
 
Seniors Melissa Lacroix and Vicki Bendus, junior Pamela Zgoda and freshman Christie Cicero all scored during a four-minute and 29-second span, while junior Hillary Pattenden made two of her 18 saves to hold the Warriors scoreless.
 
Mercyhurst entered the third trailing 2-1 after Gina Buquet wiped out a goal by junior Jess Jones to give the home team the one-goal lead.
 
Lacroix started the frezny at 3:45, scoring off a pass from senior Jesse Scanzano. Zgoda followed suit with the eventual game-winner just 3:02 later, while Bendus and Cicero netted power-play markers back-to-back at 7:17 and 8:14 to make it a 5-2 game.
 
Mercyhurst outshot Wayne State 45-20 and went 2-for-5 on the power play. The Warriors were held to a 1-for-3 clip on the man-advantage.
 
The Lakers return to Erie for their next game on Saturday, Nov. 27, when they face Colgate at 2 p.m. at Tullio Arena, home of the 2011 NCAA Women's Frozen Four. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and can be purchase at the main entrance on the game day.
