Lakers Continue to Roll, Down Army, 4-1

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team extended its winning streak to three games and completed its first series sweep of the season, downing Atlantic Hockey Association foe Army, 4-1, on Saturday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The Lakers (3-4-1, 3-2-0 AHA) flexed their offensive muscles again, scoring at least four goals for the third straight game, and saw two players - freshman Daniel O'Donoghue and senior Ryan Raven - stretch their scoring streaks to three games. O'Donoghue scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season while Raven added an assist.

Adding to the offense, senior Steven Cameron scored a goal and an assist, junior Kevin Noble dished out a pair of helpers and freshman Taylor Holstrom and senior Scott Pitt potted a goal apiece.

The Lakers cruised through the first two periods while building a 2-0 lead on goals by O'Donoghue and Holstrom before hitting a small bump in the road early in the third. Army cut the deficit in half when Dan Lauwers scored on the power play just 55 seconds in and then looked for more after being awarded consecutive power plays.

After killing off both man-advantages, Mercyhurst turned aside the Black Knights with back-to-back goals by Cameron and Pitt less than three minutes apart nearing the midway point of the frame.

Mercyhurst controlled the game by outshooting Army 31-22 and got great goaltending again from senior Ryan Zapolski, who made 21 saves and allowed the lone power-play score on seven opportunities. He is now 3-1-0 on the season and has allowed just three goals in his past three games.

The Lakers finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play.

Sitting in a tie for fifth place in the AHA standings, Mercyhurst will look to move up even further when it takes on first place Robert Morris next Friday, Nov. 19, at the RMU Island Sports Center. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
