Undefeated No.4 Lakers Beat Firebirds, 4-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No.4 Mercyhurst College men's team faced off against a non-conference opponent in District of Columbia. The Lakers won with a score of 4-1, graduate student Christoph Hampel netted a career high, three goals in Sunday's matchup.  With the win the Lakers now move to 11-0-2 on the year.

Mercyhurst totaled 17 shots in the game compared to just three from the Firebirds.  Mercyhurst took eleven of those shots in the second half where they applied heavy offensive pressure and scored three times.  The Lakers also held a corner kick advantage throughout the game, 5-1.

Hampel's first goal came in the 35th minute when he headed the ball into the ground and found the back of the net for his fifth on the season.  Just three minutes later District of Columbia answered back with a netter of their own, scoring a goal off of a penalty, making it just the eighth goal scored against the Lakers.  The two teams headed into halftime knotted at 1-1.

The score wouldn't stay tied for long as Hampel struck again in the 65th minute for his sixth of the season, he ripped a shot into the back of the net off of a penalty.  This marks the second time this season Hampel has struck on a penalty, the last time was against Shippensburg University a game the Lakers went on to win.

Junior Alex Manea took four shots on Sunday and tallied his team leading 10th goal in the 81st minute when he beat a defender with his dribble then rifled the ball into the nylon.  Four minutes later, Hampel netted his seventh goal after he beat the Firebirds goal keeper for the third time of the game.

The Lakers next game will be played on October, 19 in Bloomsburg, Pa., against Bloomsburg University.  The Lakers hold an 8-0 all-time record against the Huskies.
