Lakers Rally and Outlast Cheyney for Sixth-Straight Win, 68-67

ERIE, Pa. -- Jason Snow hit a free throw with 13 seconds left and Cheyney's Kevin Presbery missed a 3-point shot as time expired to give Mercyhurst College a 68-67 come-from-behind victory in the second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover contest.

The win is the Lakers sixth-straight, improving their overall mark to 9-2. Meanwhile, Cheyney falls for the second time in as many days and moves to 5-3 on the year.

The Lakers defense turned up the intensity in the last 2:20 seconds to help erase a nine-point deficit, with Mercyhurst forcing three turnovers in the last 1:24 of the game. Offensively, the transition game during that stretch was aided by a 10-of-12 performance from the charity stripe.

The Lakers Heiden Ratner was an integral part of the turnaround as he scored eight of his team-high 17 points in the final minutes and added two steals.

The junior guard cut the deficit to 67-64 with just over a minute left after he stole the in-bounds pass and quickly deposited a layup.

On the Wolves next possession, Nnamdi Nnadili stole the ball from Cheyney's Rob Townsend and hit Ratner for a fast-break layup, who made the free throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play and knot the score for the 10th time in the game, 67-67.

Again, Nnadili came up big defensively on the ensuing Wolves possession, blocking Bruce Kennedy's layup from behind and grabbing the rebound.

Cheyney would have a chance to take the lead on its next possession after Jordan Armstrong fouled Presbery, but Presbery could not connect on either of his foul shots.

The Lakers held an advantage at the charity stripe, hitting 26-of-33 attempts, including 14-of-18 in the second half. Shelton Jackson, who was the only other Laker in double-figures, was a perfect 8-of-8 at the line en route to 12 points. For the Wolves, they hit 15-of-24 attempts from the free-throw line and were led by three players in double-figures. Sharif Bray posted a game-high 19 tallies and was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Tyrone Smith added 12 markers and Presbery deposited 10.

The two teams were tied at halftime, 37-37, after the Wolves erased a 12-point Laker lead. However, Mercyhurst stayed close thanks to a 12-of-15 performance from the line.

For the game, the Lakers shot 19-of-46 from the floor (41.3 percent) while Cheyney hit 24-of-52 (46.2 percent).
Nine of 11 Lakers who saw action scored, including Christian Cornelius with nine points and Armstrong and Jeremiah Wise with eight tallies each.

Next up for the Lakers is the second PSAC crossover weekend. Mercyhurst will travel to West Chester and Millersville on Jan. 9 and 10, respectively.

Notes:
Head coach Gary Manchel tied Dick Fox for third-place on the all-time wins list.  In his seventh season, Manchel is now 101-77 at the helm and six wins away from becoming the Lakers all-time leader, surpassing Karl Fogel (106-106 record from 1995-2003).

Junior guard Heiden Ratner led the Lakers in scoring for the sixth-straight game, becoming the first Mercyhurst player to do so since Joshua Helm paced the Lakers in the first nine games of the 2003-04 season.

The Lakers six consecutive wins is the most since posting 11 straight victories to start the 2008-09 season.  The 11-0 start was one shy of the Lakers longest winning streak and established a new program best to open a season.
