BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team saw its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday as No. 12 Minnesota Duluth handed the Lakers a 6-0 setback at the 2010 Sheraton / TD Bank Catamount Cup, hosted by the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt.
The Lakers, who suffer their first shutout since a 2-0 loss against Air Force in the Atlantic Hockey Championship Game last season, fall to 9-10-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 12-6-1 with their sixth win in the past eight games.
Minnesota Duluth built its lead with a goal in the first period, three in the second and two in the third. Travis Oleksuk netted the eventual game-winner with 7:31 remaining in the opening frame. UMD netminder and Pittsburgh, Pa., native Kenny Reiter earned his first career shutout with 41 saves.
Junior
Ryan Zapolski suffered the loss with 33 saves and six goals allowed through nearly 54 minutes worth of action. Sophomore
Max Strang played 6:31 with two saves. Minnesota Duluth outshot Mercyhurst 41-26.
The Lakers will take on Vermont or Alabama - Huntsville in the consolation game on Sunday, Jan. 3, at 4 p.m.
