Big First Half Lifts No. 7 Field Hockey Past Seton Hill, 3-2

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 7 Mercyhurst College field hockey team used three first-half goals to shake off a slow start and defeat Seton Hill, 3-2, in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon in Greensburg, Pa.
In a game that saw both teams combine for five scores in the first half, the Lakers were forced to overcome two early deficits before they could improve to 5-1 on the season.
Sophomore Serena Slattery, who paced the offense with three points, wiped the slate clean after the Griffins scored the game's first goal with just 9:44 elapsed. Set up in front of the cage, Slattery took the ball away from a defender and blasted it to the far post to make the score 1-1 at 23:23.
The Griffins regained the lead less than 11 minutes later when Krista Archembeau chipped in her second of the game on a penalty corner at 13:28.
Mercyhurst buckled down from that point, holding the Griffins to just three shots over the final 55 minutes while adding a pair of goals. Junior Sara Wowkowych tied the game at 2-2 when she knocked in a pass from sophomore Vicky George on the doorstep at 13:35. Less than three minutes later, senior Kelsie Weber gave the Lakers the win by deflecting a shot from Slattery past the Griffins' netminder with 11:20 remaining.
Neither team found the back of the net in second, as the Mercyhurst defense kept the Griffins from putting a shot on goal, while SHU's Nadine Wallace made eight of her 11 saves in the frame. Sophomore Ashley Wiskup, meanwhile, recorded four saves to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Mercyhurst finished the game with a 21-10 advantage in shots and a 12-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Lakers continue their non-conference road-trip this weekend with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover at East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Sept. 19.
