Erie, Pa. – Senior
Breanna Haggerty scored a season-high eight goals and added an assist as the sixth-ranked Mercyhurst College women's lacrosse team pushed past Bloomsburg, 15-14, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Tullio Field. The Lakers improve to 8-0 on the season while Bloomsburg falls to 6-2 overall.
Haggerty's eight-goal peformance marked her second-highest single-game goal output of her career. Her top peformance came last season when she scored nine against Queens (N.C.) on March 9, 2008.
Besides Haggerty, five other Lakers contributed offense. Sophomores
Kimberly Masterton and
Elizabeth Tice combined for six points. Masterton scored two goals and added two assists while Tice netted two goals. Senior
Jessie Horeth, freshman
Ally Keirn and junior
Kristie Jennings recorded a goal and an assist each.
Haggerty put on a show in the first half, scoring five of the team's six goals to take a 6-6 score into break. She opened the game with a goal at 29:29 before breaking up a three-goal run that put the Huskies up 3-1 at 17:13. Following another marker from Bloomsburg, Haggerty powered the Lakers to a 6-4 lead, contributing three scores during a four-goal streak. Bloomsburg closed out the half with back-to-back tallies.
The Lakers saw more of a balanced attack in the second half with three other players getting in the scoring column. Masterton and Tice pushed the Lakers out to an 8-6 lead with goals at 28:02 and 25:08. After a Bloom score a few minutes later, Haggerty returned to form with her sixth of the game at 23:25.
Despite holding the upper hand for most of game, the Lakers saw Bloomsburg begin to build up some steam heading into the final 22 minutes. The Huskies put together a 6-1 scoring run over a 14 minute and 31 second span to turn a 9-7 deficit into a 13-10 lead. The run, which was the longest by either team in the game, forced head coach
Cecil C. Pilson to call timeout.
After the break, the Lakers bounced back to tie game at 13-13 with goals from Jennings at 3:40, Haggerty at 3:28 and Tice with just 29 seconds showing on the clock.
Both teams traded goals in the first overtime session. Kim Springman got the first punch in for Bloomsburg at 2:35 while Horeth kept the teams playing with a tally at the 29-second mark.
Following a scoreless second half, the two teams continued into the sudden-victory stage of overtime, where the Lakers would find the scoring play they were looking for. After forcing a Husky turnover, junior
Maeve McGoff found a wide-open Masterton running down field. Masterton caught the long pass, flew past several defenders and ripped a shot top-shelf to end the game with 1:26 remaining.
Along with her helper, McGoff posted 10 saves and scooped up four ground balls. Mercyhurst held a 41-29 advantage in shots and a 28-24 edge in ground balls.
The Lakers return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play on Saturday, April 4 with a 7 p.m. contest at cross-town rival Gannon.
