No. 4 Lakers Run Past St. Andrews, 21-3

Laurinburg, N.C. – The No. 4 Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team let the offense run wild Monday afternoon, as the Lakers defeated St. Andrews, 21-3, at Knights Lacrosse Field in Laurinburg, N.C.

The Lakers, who start out the season 2-0 for the eighth straight year, saw 11 different players score in the victory.

Juniors Michael Dugan and Michael Sciulli led the way with a combined nine points. Dugan scored four goals and added an assist while Scuilli followed up his five-point outing against Wingate with two goals and two assists.

Other Lakers contributing multi-point performances included senior Mike Bartlett with a hat-trick, junior Tyler Burton with two goals and an assist and junior Trevor Rice with a score and two helpers. Senior Aaron Manzer and sophomore Cameron McLean registered a goal and an assist apiece.

Mercyhurst quickly took control of the contest by building a 12-1 lead through the first half. The Lakers unleashed seven goals in the first quarter and were leading 9-0 before the Knights got on the board with a tally by Kyle Loda at the 12:21 mark of the second.

It was much of the same in the third as Mercyhurst tacked in another seven scores, including four in the final two minutes, to take a 19-1 lead. The Lakers wrapped up their highest-scoring output since the 2006 season when they scored 20 goals on two occasions with a pair of man-up markers.

Three Laker netminders saw action during the contest. Senior Jason LaShomb earned the win with six saves through the first half while sophomore Zach Nash stopped three shots in the third and sophomore Michael Jeschawitz fended off five in the fourth.

Mercyhurst outshot the St. Andrews, 43-26, and held a 58-38 edge in groundballs. The Lakers also won the battle in face-offs with an 18-27 advantage. Junior #C.J. Blanchard went 6-of-7 while senior Mike Thon# won 4-of-6 to go along with his two assists.

The Lakers will have next weekend off as they prepare to take on No. 2 LeMoyne on Saturday, March 14 in Rochester, N.Y.
