Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team moved a step closer to capturing its second Atlantic Hockey Association Championship in program history, as the Lakers defeated Army, 5-0, to win the best of three AHA Quarterfinal series Saturday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the win, the Lakers advance to the AHA Semifinals next weekend in Rochester, N.Y.
The Lakers (21-14-3) quickly disposed of the Black Knights in the first period, scoring three goals on 10 shots. Junior
Matt Fennell netted the game-winner and his third of the series at 7:50. Junior
Cody Collins followed suit with his fifth of the season at 14:00 before freshman
Phil Ginand added his 15th of the year at 16:15.
Mercyhurst increased its lead with goals in the final two periods. Senior captain
Matt Pierce improved his team-leading goal total to 24 with a strike at 14:01 of the second while classmate
Brett Robinson put the finishing touches on the game with an unassisted marker at 8:21 of the third.
Sophomore
Ryan Zapolski secured his fourth career shutout with 27 saves. The Lakers held a 33-27 edge in shots and were 0-for-5 on the power-play.
