HOUSTON, Texas – Facing elimination,
Payne Lint assured himself of what had eluded him in two previous trips to the NCAA Wrestling Championships – an All-America certificate.
In the second consolation round, the 125-pound senior staged a furious rally in the final period en route to a fall over Nebraska-Omaha's Matt Rein at 5:41 to remain alive in the 2009 Wrestling Championships and advance to the third round of consolations at 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, March 14.
“It feels good, but I'm not fully satisfied” says Lint. “I'm just trying to make it as far as I can now, maybe even to third.”
Lint joined
Andy Lamancusa and
Josh Shields as All-Americans with the two advancing earlier today to the championship semifinals behind dominate efforts.
“We said we were going to do it (have all three Mercyhurst wrestlers become All-Americans) and we did it,” said Lint. “Now, we just have to have them both win it all and our goals are met.”
The Lakers advanced to the placing round behind three bonus point wins.
At 157 pounds, No. 6 Lamancusa improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 16-7 major decision over John Sundgren of St. Cloud St. It was a record-breaking performance all-around as Lamancusa set the Lakers' single-season victory record (35) and added to his own single-season (12) and career marks (21) for major decisions. It is his second All-America certificate after placing sixth as a freshman.
For No. 1 Shields at 165 pounds, he improved his winning streak to 19 matches after posting a quarterfinal fall over Minn. St. Mankato's Tim Matheson at 6:54 to improve to 27-3 on the year. This is the sophomore's second All-America certificate after placing fourth at 174 pounds a year ago.
Saturday's action will feature the championship semifinals, third round consolations, consolation semifinals and 3rd, 5th and 7th place matches.
"We brought three and we placed three," said head coach
Mike Wehler. "Andy and Josh are chasing down a national championship and Payne has worked so hard this season. I'm really proud he could get that All-America finish before closing out his career."
Lint will face Carlton Hamilton of Anderson College in the third round of consolations, while in the championship semifinals, Lamancusa will battle No. 8 Travis Eggers of Upper Iowa and Shields goes against the nation's second-ranked Corey Van Groll of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Lint lost a 10-4 decision to Hamilton at the East Coast Duals on Jan. 24 and Lamancusa posted a slim 4-3 decision over Eggers at the NWCA/Cliff Keen Duals on Jan. 11. For Shields, this will be his first match against Van Groll.
