No. 3 Lakers Sweep Niagara with 5-0 Win

Niagara University, N.Y. – The No. 3 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 5-0 shutout of Niagara Sunday afternoon at the Dwyer Arena. 

The win improves the Lakers to 21-5-0 on the season, including 10-0-0 in College Hockey America play, while the Purple Eagles fall to 4-20-4 and 1-7-2 in CHA action.

Junior captain Meghan Agosta and freshman Jess Jones orchestrated the offense with a combined six points. Agosta scored a goal and added two assists while Jones tallied back-to-back markers along with a helper. With her points today, Agosta has accumulated 15 through six straight league games.

After taking a 1-0 lead on Agosta's 19th of the season in the first period, the Lakers put the pressure on the Purple Eagles through the next two frames, outshooting them 42-7 while tacking in four goals.

Sophomore Cassea Schols gave the Lakers a 2-0 cushion with her fourth goal of the season, scoring off an assist from sophomore Ashley Cockell at the 10:19 mark of the second period.

Jones kept the offense going with back-to-back markers in the third. Her first stretched the lead to 3-0 when she connected off a couple of passes from Schols and Agosta at 3:46, while her second made it 4-0 thanks to another pass from Agosta and sophomore Jesse Scanzano at 12:01.

Freshman Bailey Bram closed out the game with her fourth of the series at 14:22. Cockell and senior Valerie Chouinard earned helpers on the play.

Senior Courtney Drennen registered her second straight shutout and fourth consecutive win with 16 saves.

Mercyhurst finished game with a 55-16 advantage in shots and a 1-for-7 mark on the power-play. Niagara was 0-for-7 with the extra-man.

The Lakers return home this weekend to host Robert Morris for a two-game series on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
