Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team saw its six-game unbeaten streak come to an end Tuesday evening with a 3-2 overtime setback to Canisius in an Atlantic Hockey contest at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Freshman
Phil Ginand scored twice for the Lakers, who fall to 12-13-3 overall and 10-7-3 in Atlantic Hockey play.
After falling behind, 1-0, midway through first period, Ginand cleared the slate with his eighth goal of the season on the power-play just 2:21 into the second. Freshmen
Derek Elliot and
Patrick Goebel picked up assists on the play.
Canisius reclaimed its lead with 7:31 remaining in the frame when Dave Kostuch scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season to take a 2-1 advantage into the third.
Shortly after the intermission, Ginand evened the score again, taking a pass from senior
Brett Robinson and knocking it past Canisius' Dan Morrison for his ninth of the year at 2:02. Sophomore
Mike Gurtler picked up the secondary assist on the play.
The Golden Griffins, though, would hand the Lakers their first loss of their nine-game homestand when Carl Hudson scored on an unassisted play less than a minute into overtime.
Sophomore
Ryan Zapolski made 25 saves as the Lakers outshot the Golden Griffins 37-28. On special teams, Mercyhurst converted 1-for-4 while Canisius was shutout on two opportunities.
